Web Hosting: What You Don't Know

By Terry Viscottano

Nowadays, a web presence is of utmost importance to just about every business. Having a website online offers a number of benefits, too: you are, for one, online 24x7 and are open for business round the clock. Most businesses will benefit from these; some may not but even for them, having a website is an important task.

What should you do then?

To begin with, you need web hosting. A web host provides some space on a server for you to host your files. Without a web host, you can't host a website obviously. There are different kinds of web hosting services you can make use of.

When you are just starting off, a shared hosting isn't a bad choice. It's inexpensive, managed by others and very easy to use. You can easily get started with a shared host without spending a few hundred dollars. It doesn't have only upsides though-there are some fairly conspicuous restrictions.

Another well-known kind of web hosting is VPS. A VPS is a virtual environment set up on a remote server. This way, you can share a powerful server with a number of other people. It's perfect for blogs and sites that get a few thousand hits a month, or sites that aren't extremely resource intensive.

A dedicated server, although costly, is a very good option too. In simple words: it's an entire server that you pay for every month. If your site uses a lot of resources, getting a dedicated server is probably the best option. Does your site query the database every now and then? Need to run resource heavy programs on the machine? That's when you should choose a dedicated server.

A dedicated server need not be close to you, or in any particular country; in fact, you can find them in just about every country you can imagine. Want a server in Netherlands? Consider yourself covered. This can be pretty useful for testing across the world, and for a number of other purposes. The downside of a dedicated server, if I have to be nit picky, is that they can be really, really expensive.

However, if you run a website that deserves a dedicated server, there shouldn't be a problem buying one. If you are concerned about the price, you may want to look into dedicated servers available in different locations, not just the US.

  1. Use of a virtual private server (VPS) gives you the control and flexibility of dedicated web hosting at a lower cost. Thanks for the info.
